Historic Hot Laps: Tom Tweedie in the 1974 Elfin MS7

Tom Tweedie Sydney Retro Racefest

Head back to Sydney Motorsport Park for a few hot laps with Tom Tweedie in the 1974 Elfin MS7.

The car is a 1974 Elfin MS7 which has been a frequent competitor in HSRCA events at the hands of the Tweedies. It’s a one-off aluminium monocoque sports car based on the MS6 Formula 5000. The car weighs in at just 730 kilograms and is pushed around by a mighty 5-litre Repco V8 with Lucas fuel injection.

Garrie Cooper built it to win the Australian Sports Car Championship. He debuted it in 1974 and at the close of the 1975 season had done just that.

This awesome on-board footage comes thanks to Rob Tweedie and features Tom at the wheel of the car at Sydney Retro Racefest.

“It is this design, with a tubular chassis (beams and backbone) and streamlined fiberglass body, that makes the A110 such a great car to drive.” – Ernst Luthi

2015 Sydney Retro Speed Fest Wrap-Up and Photo Galleries

2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest Photo Gallery

Welcome home, and thanks for helping us put on a magnificent weekend of historic motorsport!

The 2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest was held over the Queens Birthday Long weekend, the 6th and 7th of June, 2015. It was the sophomore running of the event, following up from a very successful inaugural meeting in 2014.

It was also absolutely brilliant, and we’re still buzzing! We’d like to keep that historic racing buzz going just a little bit longer so we’ve put together a wrap-up and set of photo galleries from the event. Join us and take a few minutes to reminisce and catch up on the action.

2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest Photo Gallery

Sydney Retro Speedfest kicked off on Friday with private practice. This gave competitors a chance to get situated, give their cars a warm up and make sure everything was in tip top shape for the weekend’s racing. For ARDC and HSRCA members it was also an opportunity to head to the event a little early, catch up with mates and take a look around while things were a bit quieter. All in all – a very relaxed and social start to the weekend!

Joining us for Friday practice were blue skies, sunshine and some of the nicest winter weather we could possibly have hoped for. Aside from a, frankly freezing, foggy Sunday morning this beautiful weather persisted unabated throughout the weekend, making conditions exceedingly pleasant and, thanks to the low arc of the winter sun, bathing the circuit in a wonderful golden light all weekend long. Symbolic of the golden age of motorsport? Probably.

2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest Photo Gallery

Sydney Retro Speedfest is held on Sydney Motorsport Park’s Gardener circuit, which is the traditional Grand Prix circuit. This is a challenging and exciting circuit, and one on which a lot of important Australian motorsport history has been forged. This makes it the perfect location to host the incredible selection of historic sports and racing car machinery that the event attracts!

We were thrilled to be joined by a vast collection of cars at this year’s event, including many exceedingly rare and storied cars and some which made their Australian historic racing debut at the event. It’s not just the rare and exotic machinery that we love to see, however. The variety of race cars that attend our meetings is tremendous and it reflects competitors’ own histories with racing, as well as a general passion for motorsport that we all share.

Whether you’re into the mighty sportscars of Group C and A, such as the two Porsche 962s and BMW M1 Procar that joined us this weekend, Formula 1 or the Aussie muscle of the Heritage Touring Car Series, or the thrilling racing in Formula Vee and Formula Ford, Group N and Group S, or any and everything in between – you would’ve found more than a few things to be excited about at this year’s Speedfest!

2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest Photo Gallery

Each car was beautifully maintained and immaculately presented, and we’d like to extend our sincere thanks and compliments to every competitor who put in such an impressive effort in doing so and joining us for the meeting. We greatly appreciate your support of our events, and look forward to hosting you at many more in the future!

Things only got better when competitors took to the circuit. The incredible care reflected in the presentation of the cars was equally matched by tenacity on the track. We enjoyed some exceptional races throughout the weekend, with brilliant dices to be found throughout every class and category.

The racing was also respectful and clean with very few incidents taking place during the weekend. That’s an impressive effort considering the passionate racing and wonderful to see. It also makes organisers’ and volunteers’ jobs much more simple and helps us to keep the track singing all weekend and put on a smooth and exciting meeting, so thank you, and congratulations!

2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest Photo Gallery

The track was not the only place where interest and excitement was to be found, however. Amongst historic motorsport’s many great strengths is the access we’re able to offer spectators to competitors and their cars. This weekend was no exception, and the pits and paddock were a wonderful place to spend a few hours wandering, exploring and chatting.

Everyone is friendly and accommodating and it’s lovely to spend the time chatting your way through the event. And let’s face it – the cars and racing are all good fun, but we’re really putting all this work in to catch up with (and compete against) our friends. Thanks to everyone for producing such a lighthearted, social, warm and relaxed atmosphere!

We’d like to thank the many car clubs who got involved in Sydney Retro Speedfest and put on the classic car display. When it comes to immaculately presented classic cars – these guys have it mastered, and this was another great area of the event to explore and enjoy.

2015 Sydney Retro Speedfest Photo Gallery

Our greatest and most heartfelt thanks, however, is always reserved for the many volunteers who make our events possible. An astonishing amount of effort goes into all aspects of these race meetings and none of it would be possible without the very special people who devote their time, talent, energy and passion to giving us the opportunity to play cars with our mates.

We, and I’m sure everyone involved in any way, would like to once again extend our most sincere and heartfelt thanks for everything that you do. Your efforts allow us to have these experiences, and we’re forever grateful. THANK YOU!

This second running of the Speedfest is once again designed to showcase the best of classic racing with plenty of track time to ensure value for money for all enthusiasts, competitors and spectators alike.  The meeting will be conducted on the Gardner (traditional Grand Prix) circuit, which provides a challenging and entertaining mixture.  Each category will be allocated a qualifying session and four races over the two days, including a trophy race on the Sunday.  In addition, a large collection of historic Formula One cars will be on display and participate in demonstration hot-laps.

Those who competed in the inaugural 2014 event gave plenty of positive feedback, and we are happy to announce the TV coverage to the big screen and monitors on site, live streaming to an internet connection, and broadcast of a highlights package to be shown later on SPEEDWEEK (SBS) and FOXTEL, will again be features in 2015.  A DVD of highlights will be available for purchase at low cost by competitors, with details to be announced after the event.

With an estimated 80 minutes of track time available to each category, and the bonus of TV and live coverage exposure, the Sydney Retro Speedfest offers competitors exceptional value for participating in an established top level event.  Despite increasing costs we have managed to keep the entry fee at the 2014 level.

Entries for the event are preferred through the CAMSEventEntry online system on the CAMS website (www.meecamsau.com).  If you have problems completing entries online, or if you require a paper entry to be sent to you, please contact the HSRCA office on 02 9988 4743 for assistance and directions.

Please read the supplementary regulations prior to completing your entry form.  In particular you should note that no vehicles other than competition cars will be permitted to park in the paddock area at the rear of the pit lane garages.  Numbered spaces (each 10m x 3m in size) will be available in the skid pan area for those who seek to locate there – each space is sufficient for a race car and support vehicle.

Private practice will be available (at extra cost) on the Friday prior to the meeting.  Arrangements to participate and payment may be completed at driver sign-on on that day.

If sponsors can be arranged for individual categories or races, competitors may be required to display the naming rights sponsor’s logo on their vehicles in a specified position for the duration of the event, subject of course to CAMS approval.  Details of any such arrangements will be included in the Further Supplementary Regulations.

We thank you in anticipation of your entry and look forward to you joining us on 6-7 June.  With your valued support the Speedfest event will continue to grow and become a flagship feature of the Queen’s Birthday weekend in each year’s calendar.

With every good wish for a memorable weekend of classic motorsport,
The Sydney Retro Speedfest Committee.

Join the HSRCA in 2015 for a Golden Year of Historic Sports and Racing Cars

Historic Racing 2015

Fresh from a brilliant Tasman Trophy weekend, the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association of New South Wales is pleased to provide a full four-event historic racing calendar for 2015.

Wakefield Park and Sydney Motorsport Park will again share hosting duties in 2015, with two events at each throughout the course of the year.

Wakefield Park is up first with the HSRCA’s Historic Summer event over the weekend of the 21st-22nd of February, with pre-practice held on Friday the 20th. Surely a brilliant opportunity to get back into historic motorsport and catch up with friends after the holiday period.

The Heritage Touring Cars series will join us over the weekend, kicking off their 2015 championship season at the event.

The Heritage Touring Cars series is a six round series featuring genuine Group C and A touring cars which did battle in Australian touring car racing between 1973 and 1992. These machines are an absolute marvel on the track and will be driven hard, and the HSRCA is thrilled to host a round of their championship once again.

Held in collaboration between the HSRCA and the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club, Sydney Retro Speedfest will take over Sydney Motorsport Park on 6th-7th June, the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

The event’s inaugural running in 2014 proved hugely popular with drivers and spectators alike. Drivers in Groups C & A, Group N, Group S, Formula Ford, Formula Vee, M&O, Q&R and Regularity enjoyed unprecedented track time resulting in high-quality racing and a brilliant weekend for all involved. We are thrilled to make this opportunity available to everyone once again in 2015.

Sydney Retro Speedfest will play host to round three of the Heritage Touring Car 2015 championship season.

The second half of the year will see the Club heading back to Wakefield Park for our Historic Spring meeting. This meeting will include feature races for pre and post-WW2 historic sports and racing cars in Groups J, K and L, as well as an enduro event for Regularity.

Feature events for our early cars are well-supported and a favourite in the calendar, and it’s always a joy to see these beautifully-prepared cars driven in a spirited fashion, as well as to explore them up close in the pits and paddock, and meet and chat with the people who care for and drive them.

The Regularity enduro will see teams of three drivers nominate the number of laps that they will complete in a test of endurance and consistency.

Mark the 19th-20th September 2015 in your diaries and look forward to a wonderful weekend’s historic racing.

The HSRCA’s 2015 historic racing calendar will conclude with a premiere event at Sydney Motorsport Park over the 28th-29th of November.

In addition to these weekend-long competition events, HSRCA track days at Marulan will make their return in 2015. These non-competition events feature time trials and driver training for members, family and friends of the HSRCA and promise a lot of fun in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Stay tuned for more information as dates are confirmed.

The HSRCA will also provide a full programme of social events throughout 2015. These will range from the popular ‘Club Plate Runs’ through to Social Meetings with special guest speakers. Watch this space for more details!

The HSRCA is both pleased and proud to once again provide a full year of opportunity to enjoy historic sports and racing cars in good company and a safe, respectful environment. We are greatly appreciative of the support of this wonderful community, and look forward to sharing another brilliant year with you!
